Socio-Geographic Variations in Mortality in a Large Retired UK Population

Working with the Oxford Institute of Ageing we identified that the impact on life expectancy of living in an area of deprivation varies depending where in the country you lived.

1 December 2011

Living in an area which ranks within the 20% most deprived parts of the UK means you are likely to have a shorter life expectancy. However it also matters which region of the UK you live in. The gap in life expectancy between the least and most deprived areas is twice as large in Scotland and the South West as it is in Yorkshire. This has important ramifications for social policy and is just one example of how Club Vita is contributing to the wider debate.

And for those of you using our VitaCurves – don’t worry! This is one of the reasons why we use the full postcode of individuals rather than relying on broad measures like deprivation of the area in which you live.
